The Congressman The New York Times Calls “A Wing Nut” by Gregory Hilton

President Obama calls Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) an “outstanding Member of Congress,” and liberal pundit James Carville says “We need more lawmakers like him.” Grayson has been a frequent guest on left wing talk shows where he has been praised by Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow and Bill Maher.
The New York Times is more accurate when they call him “a wing nut” and “The liberals problem child.” On Wednesday night the Congressman spoke to MSNBC about former Vice President Dick Cheney, and said “On the Internet there’s an acronym that’s used to apply to situations like this, it’s STFU. I don’t think I can say that on the air, but I think you know what it means.” He earlier told MSNBC “I have trouble listening to what Cheney says sometimes because of the blood that drips from his teeth while he’s talking.” He also claims Cheney “likes to shoot old men in the face.”
Grayson is a graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law School who represents Florida’s 8th district and is known for crying on the House floor. He becomes very emotional over his own speeches. He not only opposes President’s Obama surge in Afghanistan but wants the present American troops removed immediately. “We have to get out, we can’t afford it any more,” Grayson said, adding that troops there “don’t make us any safer.”
When asked about a new web-site promoted by GOP critics, http://www.mycongressmanisnuts.com, the Congressman said: “They call me nuts, they call me stupid, they call me ugly. They might be right about ugly, but that’s not what is important. It’s not about me. It’s about the people who I represent.” Grayson wrote to Attorney General asking that the woman who produced the website be sent to jail for five years.
Grayson also believes:
* Republicans who oppose Obamacare “want you to die quickly.”
* A female adviser to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke (Linda Robertson) is a “K Street whore.” The exact quote is: “This lobbyist, this K street whore, is trying to teach me about economics”.
* He calls our present health care system as a “holocaust.” He said “I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven’t acted sooner to end this holocaust in America.” The United Jewish Appeal said the Congressman was wrong to refer to the holocaust in this manner.
* He says the Republican Party deserves the Nobel Prize for “fear, hatred and racism” and the GOP is composed of “knuckle-dragging Neanderthals.” There is one Republican Grayson frequently does praise, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX).
* Bill O’Reilly asked the Congressman to be a guest on his program but the lawmaker responded by calling the Fox Network “The Enemy Of America.”
* On a Netroots Nation panel, he said that his 2008 Republican opponent, former congressman Ric Keller, “did all his hiring at Hooters.”
* At a fund raiser with Joe Biden, Grayson invited the Vice President to “go water boarding” with him.
* He called conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh a “has-been hypocrite loser” who “was more lucid when he was a drug addict.”
* Before he was elected to Congress, his car sported a bumper sticker with the slogan “Bush Lied, People Died.”
* Liberal Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) says the Florida Democrat is “one fry short of a Happy Meal.”
Grayson represents a marginal district but he should not be counted out. Liberal activists throughout the nation are thrilled by the Congressman’s antics. During its first week the website for his re-election campaign brought in $234,375.
Grayson does not have a top tier GOP challenger and the current front funner is businessman Armando Gutierrez, who has an MA from Harvard. Gutierrez calls Grayson “The poster-child for all that is wrong with Washington. His overblown rhetoric demonstrates that governing is not his forte. Listening to Grayson almost makes you feel embarrassed for him. From runaway spending to hyper-partisanship, Grayson has demonstrated he is among the worst members of Congress.”
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) has told Grayson to tone down his behavior which is contributing to an atmosphere of incivility, and the Congressman responded by apologizing to Linda Robertson. However, Grayson also said he doesn’t plan to rein in his bombastic rhetorical style one bit.
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) reacted in a similar manner concerning Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC). Less than an hour after Wilson shouted “You lie!” at President Obama he was told to apologize by the GOP leadership.
In the current Orlando Sentinel poll, 89% of the respondents said Grayson is “nuts.” The Orlando Weekly endorsed Grayson, but his screaming and strange behavior made the paper rescind its backing.
