Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME) do not want to end all funding for Planned Parenthood (PP). They wrote: “The program has successfully reduced the number of unplanned pregnancies, therefore helping to reduce health care costs.” However, they both voted for the GOP budget (HR 1) which cuts off PP. HR 1 contained an amendment of Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) which eliminated the Title X family planning program, which provides contraceptives to low income women. Sens. Jim DeMint (SC) and Rand Paul (KY) both voted against the GOP budget.
Unless every Republican is united, there is no hope of recruiting a few Democrats to support the GOP alternatives. All conservatives want larger budget reductions but they have to begin with with a plan that can pass the Senate. The House can pass symbolic larger budget reductions at any time. With a Senate controlled by Democrats by a 43 to 47 margin, GOP unity is essential.
Senators Murkowski and Collins could have said they were not voting with us because of Planned Parenthood. They did not do that. We needed their vote, and stayed with us. We need every Republican vote. The Republicans who voted against the budget got press coverage, but it hurts our cause.
If Murkowski and Collins had voted against the GOP budget every conservative would have screamed RINOs. If DeMint and Paul do it, well that OK, they are acting for principle. The news media flocks to a Republican who opposes GOP policy. That is considered newsworthy. Lisa Murkowski’s recent letter supporting Planned Parenthood is described in the article below and means nothing. Her vote in opposition to PP funding meant everything.

DeMint tried to warn us. But Lisa lied. Now she’s fighting to make sure your taxpayer dollars are used to kill babies. And how do Washington Republicans respond to this betrayal by Murkowski, who lost the primary, vilified a patriot like Joe Miller, and lied about wanting to use taxpayer funds for abortion? They promote Murkowski as spokeswoman for the Republican Party, of course. GOP FAIL.
